Welcome to Markee Games, home of “The Game of 49”

Funded on Kickstarter! Featured at Gen Con, BGG Con, PAX East, and the Boston Festival of Indie Games!

“The Game of 49” has won a diverse audience—casual gamers, strategy gamers, and family gamers—with its unique blend of simplicity, strategy, and nonstop player interaction.

The game components are classic: board, cards, chips, and play money. The objective is familiar: get 4-in-a-row to win. But limit players’ starting cash to $49 and make every turn an all-or-nothing auction, and the result is a game of meticulous money management, brinkmanship bidding, and surprising subtlety.

Chips in a row. Money under the table. Game on the line. That’s “The Game
of 49.”

AdMagic Hosts “49” at Toy Fair

“The Game of 49” exhibited at the American International Toy Fair in New York City, February 4–17, as a guest of indie game publishing specialist AdMagic. We had the opportunity to show off our wares to many of the more than 25,000 attendees, and "49" garnered a lot of positive feedback, along with retailer interest, and (ahem) the occasional celebrity endorsement.

“49” Named “Best Family Game” and a “Top 10” Game of 2014

Dan King, aka The Game Boy Geek, selected “The Game of 49” as his “Best Family Game” and “Best Surprise Game” of 2014—the first time King has honored a single  game in two categories. He also ranked “49” number 4 in his Top 10 Games list for 2014.

These selections follow “49’s” smashing success at BGG Con in November, where Game Boy Geek named “49” his “sleeper hit” of the convention. The game also received a shout-out during a live Dice Tower podcast from BGG Con after King introduced it to Dice Tower's Tom Vassel.

“The Game of 49” Returns to Boston Festival of Indie Games

One year after appearing as a prototype in the Boston Festival of Indie Games Tabletop Showcase, “The Game of 49” returned to the festival, held September 13 at MIT, as a published game. Festival attendees were able to play and purchase "49" at the Markee Games "Indie Exhibitor" booth throughout the day-long event. Local Kickstarter backers of "49" also were invited to visit the booth to claim their Kickstarter reward copies.

In a press release for the festival, "49" designer Mark Corsey noted: “A year ago we demonstrated a prototype that we’d built from Avery labels and cardboard and packaging tape. One of the people who stopped by our table to play the game was Shari Spiro, the president of AdMagic. This September we’re exhibiting—and selling—the published ‘Game of 49,’ printed by AdMagic.”

The game’s official launch took place in August at Gen Con. But, Corsey added, “There’s something especially gratifying about bringing the published game back to FIG this September.”
